Best Week of the Year?
I’m looking forward to this week, not just because it’s Halloween Week, but also because NC State and Florida State play this Thursday night. These two teams are looking like the front-runners for the Atlantic. Though, NC State could certainly use a big win against FSU after suffering a surprising loss to East Carolina two weeks ago. Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson operates a high-powered offense, which is currently 7th in the nation in total passing. However, the defense hasn’t looked so spectacular. ECU had its way over the Wolfpack as the Pirates racked up close to 500 total yards. At one point, NC State was down 21-0 before Russell Wilson led the Pack back and tied it up at 27-27. ECU was eventually able to squeak out a win in overtime though.
Welcome to Heartbreak...
Down in Tallahassee, FSU is off to an impressive 6-1 start. This team has had the right pieces for a couple seasons now, but Jimbo Fisher was the guy to put them all together. The Seminoles avoided a little scare two weekends ago against Boston College though. It was a game in which QB Christian Ponder threw 3 interceptions to the Eagles defense. I don’t see him repeating the same mistakes against NC State this Thursday. On paper, this game has the makings to be an offensive shoot-out. My heart always wants to go with NC State, however in my head I don’t trust the Pack defense. I worry about that potent ground game. FSU is likely the best team NC State will face yet, and If Tom O’Brien can pass this test then the sky’s the limit.

Is there a legitimate team in the Big 12?
Will a real Big 12 Contender please stand up? This preseason I was extremely high on Oklahoma due to its playmakers returning on offense. The defense only returned 5, but I never thought the lack of experience on defense would hinder the Sooners from making a serious national title run. However, with the exception of wins over Florida State and Iowa State this team has been far from dominant. Texas just looks sorry, with an ugly beating at home against UCLA and an even more pitiful loss to Iowa State. The Longhorns were 6-0 against the Cyclones before coming into this game. Nebraska looked like a serious contender however the loss to Texas didn’t help them at all. But this week, Missouri heads into Lincoln and even though the Tigers have rolled to a 7-0 start I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cornhuskers pull off the upset. Though if Mizzou can get a victory on the road this team should be able to run with it in the North. If you look at the standings in the South, Baylor...yes, Baylor is in first place. It’s still early, but what a difference a year makes. The Bears ended 2009 in last place in the South with a 1-7 record. I’m not sold on Baylor yet, but it just goes to show you how much parody exists in the Big 12 this year.

Another Big Weekend!
Another glorious Saturday returns with several huge games on the slate, including Arkansas vs. Auburn, Texas vs. Nebraska, and Ohio State vs. Wisconsin…just to name a few.
The Arkansas vs. Auburn game has the potential to be the best game of the weekend. Auburn has started the season off undefeated just like last season. However last year Ryan Mallett and his Razorbacks snapped the Tigers’ streak in Week 6. Will Mallett snap that streak again this weekend? I believe Arkansas should be undefeated and if it weren’t for so many mistakes against Alabama, it would be. In that close 24-20 loss, Mallett threw 3 INTs which is exactly the same amount of times I’ve mentioned him in this entry. It definitely won’t be an easy victory on the road at Auburn but if Mr. Mallett can limit those mistakes they’ll make it 3 straight victories over Auburn.
I’ve been looking forward to this Texas vs. Nebraska game since last season when Texas won with a second left on the clock. Texas has not been looking like the dominant team we’ve all been used to recently: Two straight losses (against UCLA and Oklahoma). But over in Lincoln, Nebraska has been playing like a national championship contender. For Nebraska to stay in the conversation it must blow Texas out at home this weekend. Quarterback Taylor Martinez is a dual-threat and I look for him to have a big game against the Longhorns.
Ohio State has a tough road test up in Madison and no doubt Camp Randall will be rockin’. The Buckeyes escaped a scare over in Champaign a couple weeks ago and even though the Illini didn’t win, they exposed a lot of OSU’s weaknesses. If Wisconsin stands to have any chance in this game it must get workhorse John Clay going from the first snap. In the Week 5 loss to Michigan State, Clay rushed for under 100 yards. The Badgers are most effective when he’s got 100+. Wisconsin is going to have to play a complete game to win this one, but if the Badgers pull off the upset this will be the biggest win this program has experienced under Brett Bielema’s tenure as head coach.
